At the beginning of OTI, Alabama was and is still facing a complex public health crisis and continues to have one of the highest opioid prescribing rates in the country. Combating the crisis involves understanding how it transpired, recognizing contributing factors, and targeting key areas with education and training.

The Alabama Opioid Training Institute, a collaboration between the Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy and the Alabama Department of Mental Health, was comprised of a free one-day education program, that included programs for Community Leaders intended to raise awareness of Opioid Use Disorder and empower communities and individuals to take part in and collaborate with efforts battling the opioid crisis. Program offerings for Healthcare Providers intended to provide medical professionals with the knowledge needed to assist with the prevention of new Opioid Use Disorder instances.

The Alabama Opioid Training Institutes focused on two specific yet important groups to combat this crisis: healthcare providers for CME training and community leaders across many fields.
